Armed with the standard list of questions most interviewers keep on hand, I pondered which ones I would draw from for today’s piece.

After speaking to Ms. A’ngelle I felt a bit more secure in what I would bring forth. I did because I took off the restraints and wrote from the heart. You see, once you have spent any length of time with LaCricia A’ngelle, your heart has been forever touched by the effervescent author from Tennessee.

Effervescent – bubbling, scintillating, sparkling, sparkling, marked by high spirits. Each of the aforementioned adjectives can certainly be used to describe LaCricia. They can because she is FREE. Within that freedom she is unencumbered by the restraints that too often confine the literary prose. Because she is free she writes with abandon, wisdom, skill and the love of God. What the Future Holds

When asked how he came to title his latest short story ‘Long Term’, Maurice Gray, chuckles and then easily responds that it came from real life experience. Like his characters, he once worked temporary assignments. What he observed was that the personalities of many in the temporary positions were well-suited for the work. Their short attention spans made them perfect for their short term projects; i.e., they soon tired of the work and were ready to move on.

A people watcher by nature Maurice compared his surveillances to how relationships are evaluated. Those looking for the casual move in quickly; get what they can get and then move on – these are short-term assignments. He believes that this state of the temporary can mature as focus widens, attention span enlarges and true value is placed on the quality of the relationship, be it personal or business.

Like the variety of assignments he has had, Maurice wears many hats. He is a sought after editor who also serves on the faculties of the Sandy Cove and Greater Philadelphia Christian Writers Conferences where he teaches workshops and evaluates manuscripts for attendees. He is also a member of the Damascus Road Authors.

A confessed loner who has found himself in a profession that requires much interaction with the public Maurice has found himself rising in the ranks of the Greater Newark area Toastmasters club.

Using laughter as medicine to heal most situations Maurice has been reviving his comedic skills at some of his public venues. He is also an accomplished singer and is very active in the Men’s Chorus and Singles ministry at Bethel AME Church in Wilmington, DE near his home in New Castle, DE.

Author Michelle Larks is a wife, mother and IT professional. In my opinion she should add consummate hostess to her list of abilities.

Speaking with Michelle via telephone is akin to being ushered into the inner sanctum of her suburban Chicago home. Exuding a disarming candor Ms. Larks invited me into a conversation that most reserve for close friends. In doing so I believe that beside the word vulnerability in the dictionary, we will now find her picture.

During our short time together Michelle shared the story of how she and her husband had to escape from their burning home. I expected her words to revolve around all the things she had lost, but they did not.

Michelle, in her soft-spoken voice relayed the reality of that moment. That reality was that although she was offered help, it was refused. She refused the help believing that things were not as bad as they seemed. Reality opened her eyes to the fact that things were bad in terms of the damage done to the home. Even at that Michelle made the best of the situation – she and her husband checked into a hotel.

Anyone who has had to live through a remodel can attest to the fact that the timeline can become quite an inconvenience. Yet it is often in our inconvenience, our patience, our experience with that which is not a part of our ordinary routine where our greatest lessons are learned.

What was the lesson Michelle learned?

What Michelle candidly revealed was that it took this experience to show her that needing others, being able to depend upon and accept the blessings awaiting you does not label you a burden or inept. She was able to break out of what could have held back/blocked her blessings when she chose to share her needs with others.

When she chose to accept what she would have unselfishly given to others, blessings poured in. They poured in to the degree that with a book signing on her agenda and no clothes to wear, a business outfit came in the mail from someone in her online writing group.

When asked what she would like readers to know about her and her works her answer touches personal aspects of the life she has lived. Michelle is a people person, one who does not pass judgment, but will give advice when asked. Within the pages she writes her focus is set upon family dynamics. She desires to show how people interact and how individual lives and family can be empowered by effective communication.

How Are You Living?

What the Bayou Saw by Patti Lacy is a journey into an often told story, told through a panoramic lens. More than the black and white vision is shown as we become privy to Sally’s (the main character) initiation into mindsets about Blacks as a youth, what she experienced first hand at a later age and how she must come to grips with it in the presence.

Although a work of fiction Author Lacy does a great job of showing the consequence and guilt brought on by living a lie and redemption that can be had when we seek truth.

Who's Interpretation?

Practicing What You Preach is an excellent presentation of what happens when a person comes down with a case of Pharisees Fever. The most prevalent symptom of the disease is a dedication to living by the letter of the law rather than the humanity of it. Such is the case for Melissa Anderson.

After rededicating her life to Christ, Melissa focuses on her job and her religion. The problem with this is that her religious mind is overriding common sense.

The book is one that challenges the reader to pull out their own bibles. Some will call this work preachy, others will find it nourishing. What I found is that Ms. Davis-Griggs skillfully presents real life conflict while seaming it to the necessity of needing to truly understand the laws that govern your life, but not missing out on life due to constraints of self-imposed rigidity.

A woman with a plan, Indigo is pleased with how her life is turning out. Her carefully laid plans are jeopardized when the proposal she wants is publicly extended at the wrong time. The proposal not only places her in a precarious situation, it totally disrupts the pre-planned timeline she lives by.

Ms. Hawkins-Adams does a great job of uncovering what many of us flirt with – the spirit of compromise. Indigo entertains compromise because she does not want to hurt Brian. Her choice is hers alone to make, but will it ultimately destroy her and others in the long-term process?

After speaking with Booker T. Mattison for an hour I am compelled to describe him as a young man who embodies the spirit of an old soul. His insight as to how to use what is current in order to plant seeds of expectation for generations to come is commendable. It is also infectious and encouraging.

In addition to being an author Booker’s credentials include that of filmmaker, screenwriter and music videos. He sees his emergence from a ten-year barrenness as one that has set him on his current path. Currently that path is leading him to connect with African Americans on a large scale. On that scale is the hope to accomplish with the ‘Hype’ trilogy, that which is synonymous with the Harry Potter phenomenon.

Some will be challenged by the expression of such an admirable goal. They will because Unsigned Hype, a work that presents characters most African Americans are familiar with, does not smack of the stereotypical boy in the hood melodrama. It is neither a literary aberration nor anomaly. It is a story about those who look like us. Hype connects with who we are and have been, rather than being the expected tale from an African American author feeding the public’s preconceived perception of who they believe us to be. In essence he has created a destination for Christian YA (young adult) reading that did not previously exist.

When asked to summarize the content of his debut novel Booker quickly responds, “It is an urban apologetics of Hip Hop.”

The response may take many off guard and quite frankly, offend others attempting to be ‘down’. In a voice strong in conviction and filled with passion Mr. Mattison candidly relays truth. That truth is that those looking from the outside in will never be culturally equipped to understand the ‘hood’ experience.

Booker T. Mattison resides in New York. He enjoys hanging out with his wife and children and proudly states that what represents him is his family.

National Stroke Awareness Month

May is National Stroke Awareness Month. According to the National Stroke Association one half of all African American women will die from stroke or heart disease. This is a disheartening statistic (no pun intended). Also as startling is the medical fact that twice as many women die from stroke than breast cancer each year. Stroke also known as a “brain attack” is when a blood clot blocks an artery or a blood vessel breaks, interrupting the blood flow to an area of the brain. There are no measurable reasons for the excessive amount of stroke and heart issues that African Americans are affected more than Caucasians.

What influenced you to write this book?
The inspiration or influence came from God of course, but I wanted God to use my life experiences to help bring hope, encouragement and healing to those who are hurting. I wanted something good to come out of my disappointment, my set-backs and trials that would cause anyone who would read my book to be optimistic regardless of the circumstances. I was certain that this was the direction He wanted me to take.

What do you hope readers will learn/discover from reading That Was Then, This Is Now, This Broken Vessel Restored?
I want my readers to get inspired, encouraged and empowered. When they read my book they will realize that God is able to bring total restoration no matter how difficult the situation, circumstances or trials. The inspiration will come because they would have read about the life of someone who made it through. They will be encouraged because in the book I give them the worse situations but those situations come with scriptures that they can use to help them with what they are facing. People will definitely be empowered, empowered to face everything in life.

What advice can you give to a woman experiencing bitterness due to a broken relationship?
The first thing one must do is to forgive. I realize that this might be hard especially if the other person has hurt you badly but healing will only come when we release those that hurt us. This passage speaks strongly on how important it is to forgive. Mark 11:25-26

And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him and let it drop (leave it, let it go), in order that your Father Who is in heaven may also forgive you your [own] failings and shortcomings and let them drop. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your failings and shortcomings. Once you release those that have offended you God will began restore and heal you of the bruises and scars. Read Chapter 2 of That Was Then, This Is Now: Don't Get Bitter, Get Better.

An avid reader since childhood, Wanda responded to the voice in her head by penning and self-publishing her debut novel, First Sunday in October, (January 2007). More than her literary achievements, I find her insight, genuine caring for others combined with spiritual gifts, an asset for those blessed to come in contact with her. Conversations with Wanda are filled with humor and wisdom most associate with a more age-seasoned saint.

Through her literary renderings Wanda is very open regarding the necessity for integrity on every level of leadership. This is seen throughout the pages of Illusions as she reveals the expectation of a majority of church leadership for wives to cover the flaws of their husbands. Yet, in doing as she has been taught, it is she (the wife), who is left uncovered. It is this role reversal that breeds seeds of discourse within the family unit.

Candidly Wanda speaks of her desire for her readers to understand that, “It is okay not be perfect.” She goes on to express that we should not become so engrossed with things/position to the degree that we cannot or refuse to be honest. “Be true to yourself,” is the advice she offers to those who may not understand how to walk away from destructive habits. “There is help for the addict. There is help for YOU, if you want it.”

As a Kingdom scribe Ms Campbell is not reticent when proclaiming the necessity of responsibility. “If God has trusted you with His baby, you have to carefully nurture the baby.” As for her future she is clear that ministry is her first priority. Conversations with Pat Simmons are always delightful and filled with caring for others.

When she initially revealed the subject-matter of Talk to Me, I was intrigued. Over time she revealed that she has honed her ASL (American Sign Language) skills in order to communicate with her brother-in-law who is deaf. That alone touched my heart. But, if you have ever spent any period of time with this tireless and community-minded dynamo you would understand why.

Her humble and bubbly personality easily draws people in and sets them at ease. That admirable trait finds its way into her writings as well.

Reading books give us the opportunity to momentarily step away from the stress that life offers us. Reading books from Pat Simmons allows one to step into a fictitious world blended with enough realism to evoke inner-reflection.

In addition to being a novelist Pat has worked as a news writer, a talk show host and news reporter. She is also co-publicist for Midwest Publicity. And if that isn’t enough for a woman married twenty-five years and mother of two, Pat also handles publicity for the Romantic Times Convention.

With all the hats she wears you would think she would consider slowing down. That is not a remote possibility for the recipient of the Katherine D. Jones (2008/Romance Slam Jam). Pat is hard at work on upcoming releases. Faithful readers will be treated to Not Guilty of Love in 2009. Still Guilty and Free from Guilt, the last two books in the series will follow.

Stirring The Gift

Dijorn Moss is to be applauded for his inaugural voyage into the literary world. It is refreshing to read a Christian work that truly lives up to its genre. From the first page of My Father’s House the intent of the author is evident. What is that intent? To give hope to those facing what seems to be insurmountable odds.

Young Timothy Wells has the potential to develop into a life-changing pastor. Sooner than later his gifting will be tested. Thrust into headship of Gethsemane Church, he is beset with trials that would test the faith of a seasoned Pastor. It will be the trials that the young pastor faces that will cause him to draw upon his faith and the gifts imparted into him by his mentor and ministry predecessor.

How Author Moss presents the myriad of needs for Timothy’s parishioners, his students and family will speak to readers from all walks of life. The situations are real and their reactions and consequences are believable.

Enjoyable from beginning to end, I do believe this story would have benefited from more depth given to the characters as well as deeper insight as to how each processed through their trials. All in all I would recommend this to others. I look forward to the next release from Dijorn Moss.

I consider this an honor because it is refreshing to present to others those who take the covenant of marriage seriously. This is a scripture that every parent should heed, but few do. Inside the pages of My Son’s Wife, the latest page-turner from author Shelia Lipsey, readers will come face-to-face with the bi-product of parental neglect.

For First Lady Audrey Graham keeping up appearances is her ministry. If they can see it they can achieve it seems to be her personal mantra. For all intent and purposes she is the consummate first lady in every sense of the word, or is she. As you are given a look inside the private life of the Graham family, the façade of perfection begins to lose its luster.

Stiles has followed in his father’s footsteps and will soon ascend to the pastoral throne. His sister Francesca is a mystery no one, but her best friend Rena understands. When Rena and Stiles become engaged, the lid on the pot of Francesca’s questionable past and present threatens all that their mother holds dear.

Author Lipsey is to be commended for presenting a work with subject matter most do not touch beyond superficial means. With skill she opens eyes to that which statistics is showing as growing at an alarming rate within the Christian community. Equal skill is applied to addressing the subject in a way that will provoke readers to thought and possibly reassessing how they may have or are currently treating those considered to be – not the norm.

It is this reviewer’s hope that there will be more authors stepping out of the shadows to present works of standards that speak to the social ills most refuse to touch.

Reading My Wife’s Son often brought to mind the story from the bible regarding Jacob and the favoritism he harbored for two of his sons. It also made me extremely aware of a need for more books that speak to the dysfunction viewed as normal within the family unit.

Dialogue with the author, Shelia Lipsey reveals her concern for having healthy families. “My Son’s Wife is not merely a story about favoritism and family problems, it is one that reveals how delicate the human heart can be and how easily even God’s children can be the subject of mockery, ridicule, hate and persecution caused by things they experience in life. Second Annual On Assignment Think Pink for Breast Cancer Event

October has been set aside as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month; it is also the birth month of my eldest son.

Last year I wanted to do something that would honor Debra Beed (his mother) and Dean Lewis (my aunt) who lost their battle with breast cancer. To that end I proposed to donate $1.00 to breast cancer research for each person who left a comment on this blog during the month of October. This year On Assignment Publishing is increasing its donation to $2.00 per post left.

Please help us help others by stopping by, leaving a comment and encouraging others to do the same. Comments are not limited to discussion of breast cancer for there will be other discussions during the month. The goal is to amass numbers for donating to this necessary research.

Breast Cancer

Women get breast cancer when cells in the breast don't grow right and a tumor forms. Getting a mammogram (x-ray of the breast) can help find the cancer early. This gives a woman more treatment options and makes it more likely she will survive the cancer.

African American women are more likely than all other women to die from breast cancer. Tumors are found at a later, more advanced, stage so there are fewer treatment options. Some reasons for this may include not being able to get health care or not following-up after getting abnormal test results. Other reasons may include distrust of the health care system, the belief that mammograms are not needed, or not having insurance.

We do not know how to prevent breast cancer. But there are things you can do to reduce your risk, such as keeping a healthy weight and limiting how much alcohol you drink.

There are things you can do to find breast cancer early:

• Get a mammogram. It is the best way to find out if you have breast cancer. A mammogram is an x-ray picture of the breast. It can find breast cancer that is too small for you or your doctor to feel. All women starting at age 40 should get a mammogram every one to two years. Talk to your doctor about how often you need a mammogram. If your mother or sister had breast cancer, you may need to start getting mammograms earlier.

A breast self-exam and a clinical breast exam are not substitutes for mammograms.

• Get a clinical breast exam. This is a breast exam done by your doctor or nurse. She or he will check your breasts and underarms for any lumps, nipple discharge, or other changes. The breast exam should be part of a routine check up.

• Get to know your breasts. You may do monthly breast self-exams to check for any changes in your breasts. If you find a change, see your doctor right away.

Securing the Three-Fold Cord

Every now and again you come across a book that makes you ponder the reality of purpose. Me, Myself & Him is one such work. In her debut Christian novel, E.N. Joy has done a good job of reaching out to those who can truly identify with the inner struggles of life.

Locksie has a great relationship with her live-in boyfriend Dawson who daily assures her of his undying love. Through her close relationship with her Aunt, Locksie is daily informed of the unconditional love God has for her. Conflicting messages and lifestyle set off an internal tug-of-war within Locksie as she seeks to determine which is the greater love.

Dawson too is in a struggle - the struggle to lead a life devoid of outside interference. Recognizing the changes in Locksie as well as receiving unwanted advice from his younger brother does little to shine light on the future he envisioned. Add to this an eclectic good supporting cast and you are placed in the passenger's seat for Locksie's journey to understand who she is and what she will and will not accept from family, friends and lovers.

First Sunday in October presents a view of the purity that can be had in a relationship between a man and woman.

Julia Simone is not the ordinary woman. Her outer persona is the reflection of a successful woman in total control of her surroundings. The same can be said for Pastor Reginald Pennington.

The two are mature and know what they want out of life. Through happenstance they enter into a business agreement. Exposure to one another opens the door to possibilities beyond business. It will be Pastor Pennington's preconceived notion of who she is and the truth of what he expects that jeopardizes what could be. Additionally each has a past that is blocking their way to true happiness.

Unlike most romance novels, First Sunday in October takes its characters and readers through the process of becoming a friend and then growing through friendship. As like turns to love the story is not infiltrated with the trappings of steamy date nights and/or gratuitous bedroom scenes. Combining biblical truths with a strong storyline Author Campbell has presented a tale well worth reading.

Sight Ain't Seeing

Jezebel is the name often spoken in hushed tones, behind closed doors and flung at women who are considered `loose'.

The story opens by introducing us to Jessie Belle, a woman who is no stranger to the aforementioned whispers and derogatory remarks. With her reputation already sullied in the tiny town of Mayville, her options for escape are narrowing. The margin for departure enlarges when Traynor Deveraux fills in for his father at the annual revival hosted by Jessie Belle's father. Overcome by Jessie Belle's feminine whiles Traynor marries her and takes her away to the life she always dreamed of. Well, not really.

Jessie Belle lives up to the name of her biblical mirror image as she controls, manipulates and destroys many of the lives around her for personal gain. Throughout the pages of this rich story you will see how easily intelligent God-fearing persons such as her husband can walk into catastrophe with open, yet unseeing eyes.

The well developed characters and plot will keep you turning page after page in search of answers to raised questions. Without fail you are left with the knowledge that in spite of your failings, God is a forgiving God who accepts our wholehearted repentance.

Working It Out

Author Gray does not disappoint readers with this power-packed sequel to his debut novel.

In All Things Work Together, we find Fred Bennett transitioning from being a playa to a prayer. Determined to leave the past behind Fred sets out to become the disciple of God he knows he was meant to be. Challenging his walk is Raoul Carizales. Raoul, a child recovery specialist, is confident and a bit on the cocky side. He is also Fred's rival for the affection of the beautiful Yolanda. Despite their dislike for one another they find themselves needing to work together to solve one of Raoul's cases.

The author has done a great job of bringing action, rather than drama into a work that shows that real men can and do worship God while taking care of serious business.

Through the uniquely written treatise readers are offered a view into the private lives of twenty-seven women. Each is viewed as strong in their own right. All are connected by duo threads of commonality; their dependence upon prayer and faith to acknowledge that they are not in control of their destinies. Delightfully absent from this work is the impression of a regime of rigidity and uniformity to be entered into. Instead, you will see the simplicity and fervor in which each approaches prayer and are divinely ministered to.

Those who feel that the presence of high profile names, the mention of positions Ms. St. John has held and her academic and Olympic accomplishments are self-serving will not absorb the full thrust of the work. They will miss the fact that in spite of her high visibility and accomplishments, she has made a choice. Through the choice to be vulnerable, Ms. St. John speaks to the plight of many with disabilities. My oldest son lost his mother to breast cancer four years ago. Last year we found out that her sister is now battling the same disease. I also lost an aunt to breast cancer last year. In April I shared about my journey toward publication. I will reiterate something I said then, "God never gives you a purpose that you lack passion for." The passion that burned in me pushed and pushed and pushed like a baby seeking to exit the birth canal.

Prior to the birth of Business Unusual my temperament was akin to that of an expectant mother protecting her unborn fetus. No matter how often it was suggested that we abort we persevered. The choices we made to bring the baby to full term did not always meet the approval of those dispensing advice. They were however, the best for us given what was at our disposal. We believed that God would provide for the vision He placed inside of me. That said; I am proud to announce that Business Unusual, our tangible proof of our faith, made its way into the world on June 25th.

Soooooooo, what is Business Unusual? It is the first installment in the ‘Covenant Series’ from On Assignment Publishing. Below is a brief synopsis of the story that has been called “Christian fiction in its purest form.”

Bernadette Lewis is a woman no one will ever define as usual. Known purpose set her on the path to fulfilling destiny at a young age. The light that illuminates her every step comes from within. Without apology she walks with confidence and humility.

Fully satisfied with life, there is no room for distractions. She seems to have it all, but she is a living example of the adage, ‘all that glitters is not gold’.

On a personal front Bernadette is faced with dealing with the type of man her father warned that she would one day meet. Hayes Davis is that man. Learned accomplished and walking confidently in who he is, Hayes is the man at the top of most women’s resume for a husband. In spite of his glowing outer appeal, it is his inner man that must withstand the challenges that will be key to his pre-ordained walk.

The decision as to what she must do regarding the insubordination of a key employee, Falimah Meyer, causes Bernadette to revisit the vision of her company and her fourteen-year-old pledge. As she seeks to move forth she must exercise caution as she interacts with another employee, Treva Scott.

Treva is often on the short end of Falimah’s unpredictable personality swings. As she searches for her true niche in the world, her option of choice places her at the crossroads of her future.

Added to the whirlwind of change for Bernadette is the forced re-acquaintance with her maternal grandmother. She is a woman loved by the world but ritually despised by Bernadette.

Business Unusual invites the reader to walk with its characters as they process through life. Within that process the characters will touch and be touched by friends, family and those they meet along the way.

Being About The Lord's Business

Every so often, a self-published book beats the odds and grabs the attention of enough readers to draw an offer from a traditional publisher. I sure hope that this happens for this book. Dr. Linda Beed, an emerging Christian author and veteran educator has recently released her debut novel. Business Unusual is an inspirational contemporary romance that is Christian fiction in its purest form.

Bernadette Lewis is a very accomplished young businesswoman. She is the owner and President of B. L. Lewis Enterprises, a privately held consulting, software development and personal training service. Her company has been very successful in just a short period of time. Many wonder what her secret to success is. Hers is a success story grounded in faith and obedience.

As a young, single Christian woman; Bernadette has values and attributes not always understood by the secular world, but that still does not deter her from being who she was raised to be. The daughter of parents in the ministry, she and her sisters have built their careers on service to God and mankind. Their personal lives mirror that Christian upbringing and it is no surprise that as adults, they find themselves dealing with unlike personalities in the people that come into their professional lives. How Bernadette deals with these individuals is the core of this story.

Both entertaining and inspirational; I found this novel a great read for young Christian men and women. There is a lesson to be learned here. When Bernadette meets Hayes Davis, a man who is just beginning to understand his spirituality, she is very attracted to him both professionally and personally. Hayes finds in Bernadette what he never has found in a woman. He both respects and adores her and understands that this will be no ordinary dating experience. Hayes is sure that he has found his life partner, but is he prepared to live up to her expectations of him?

Other supporting characters brings full circle a story that portrays today's upscale African American singles who are at the beginning of their personal and professional life journeys. Reading this book was like watching your children grow up, not always accepting their choices but hoping that they will do well and be both happy and successful. I also loved the history of the Lewis family. They are deeply grounded in their culture and the history of African Americans who have a proud legacy in this society. Positive images of a proud people is always refreshing in a novel and this one was full of proud moments.

Business Unusual is the story of the inspiring Lewis family, their walk with the Lord and the family structure that brings each successive generation to new heights. Parental love and obligation; Christian marriage and Godly relationships between young adults are just some of the major themes of this novel. The characters are unique and interesting and the story line is very inspirational. I think that many young Christian women are going to be inspired and encouraged by Bernadette's story.

Life Changing Story

Business Unusual is the perfect title for this eloquently written novel by first time author, Linda Beed. This book focuses on Bernadette Lewis and the many individuals who are intertwined within her life. Bernadette is a strong-willed woman with a well-defined vision and steadfast spirit. She is determined to follow what she has been taught by her parents to be the morally right path. She does not intend to sway off course.

Don't expect to be able to breeze through the reading of this novel. It is not meant to be a quick read. The powerful, mind-altering messages of the importance of patience, virtue and loyalty are meant to be savored. Readers will definitely be transformed into students while exploring the pages of this meaningful creation.

No Status Quo, It's Business Unusual

Bernadette "Twinkle" Lewis was brought up by her parents in a loving God-fearing home along with her two older sisters. She has a rich heritage in not only her bloodline, but the morals and values passed down to her from generation to generation that are founded on the Word and love of God. Bernadette is privileged to have family who live the life they teach by example.

What Bernadette has been taught has prepared her to remain a virgin until she is married, something that is challenged for the first time when she meets Hayes Davis. It is not enough to know that Hayes is fine, but who is he? Is he the one God has for Bernadette to marry? She is encouraged time and time again to pray and ask God to show her Hayes' spirit and reveal to her if he is indeed her husband.

Hayes has been raised in the church as well, but influences from both his mother and father have given him a distorted understanding about who God is in relation to who he is. Thankfully his best friend, Roosevelt, and his wife Nee Nee never gave up on him, praying for Hayes, counseling and sharing with him until he comes wholeheartedly to God.

"Business Unusual" takes the reader through this pivotal time in the lives of Twinkle and Hayes, allowing us to experience their learning processes and growth as they both enter a new level in the Lord. They both learn the importance of knowing the will of God for their lives and how vitally important it is to walk in obedience to Him. This process includes family members and friends as they both see past themselves to help others they know and some they meet along the way.

There is no way I could possibly share in this review the wealth of God's love in the pages of this book, neither the blessing it was for me to read it. The characters are so very vividly written that you can see them and feel what they are going through. I am in awe of how Author Beed was able to infuse the lives of the families and friends of Bernadette Lewis and Hayes Davis without confusing the story line and yet it creates an informational background the story needs in order to be told. I am anxiously awaiting the sequel of this story that was written by an anointed Woman of God.

The Road To Publication

Hello everyone,

Thought I’d give you an update on what is going on in terms of my publishing journey.

For those of you who don’t know, Business Unusual released on June 25th. As an independent, debut author I have worked hard to present the best project I could. Getting to this point was a challenge. A challenge in terms of what others insisted I ‘must’ do in order to be considered a viable author. Those suggestions came more than I cared to hear and at times, laced with a measure of arrogance.

My decision to publish independently did not come without a great amount of prayer. Once the decision was made we moved ahead with what needed to be done. Long story short – the book is out. Soooo, that means all is well. Well, let’s see.

Initially the book was listed in online stores as unavailable. Following that snafu it was listed as available, but deliverable within four to six weeks. After three weeks we had the online availability under control. Sooo, that means all is well. Well, let’s see.

The book was online and selling. Independent stores in the Seattle, Tacoma and Portland area had them on the shelves. Requests from libraries in places I didn’t even know existed were in my inbox and mailbox. Relatives were selling to friends and co-workers. Requests for print reviews, newspaper and television interviews were coming in. Sooo, was everything okay? Noooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!

I began to receive emails from potential customers stating that when the asked for the book at national chain stores (you all know who they are) they were told it was not in the system. At this point my vision was beginning to blur.

One thing I made sure to do was to connect with the two main distributors that those bookstores order from. So what was up? A variety of reasons were given by my distributor. Rather than speculate I went on a fact-finding mission. Now here’s where home training comes in. Your mother always tells you to be nice. The Golden rule tells us to do unto others… You get the picture. Long story short, I found that there was a major problem with how the book was listed in the system. The assistant manager took care of that.

He also took the time to tell what a nice product I had (of course I had handed him a copy as he updated his computer). He even spoke to the fact that my publisher (our company On Assignment/big cheese grin) had done a great job of setting up what most independent authors miss.

After extending an apology for the inconvenience, he ordered books for not only his store, but several others as well as the opportunity to host a book signing.

I said all of this to say this, regardless of what avenue you take to publication, you must know your business. I don’t profess to know it all, but I am striving to do my best.

This Far By Faith

Today's post has a multiple purpose. First it is one of encouragement for all who are faced with adversity regarding the fulfillment of purpose.

Often we are energetic regarding the vision God has for us. Initially it may seem so easy that you feel guilty about the fun you're having. It may, at some point, be so enjoyable that you question whether this really is your assignment.

Take to heart the fact that God never gives you a purpose that you lack passion for. On that same note, know that there will be circumstances that will challenge your march to the goal-line.

It will be your faith in knowing that God, the giver of the vision, not you, who will see it through to the end. Do not be disheartened by the seemingly overwhelming obstacles that may come your way. As it is said in the book of James --'count it all joy'.

My second reason for this post is to joyfully share with you that the release of Business Unusal is close at hand. I will share more of the journey in a subsequent posting.

The journey has not been without its challenges from outside sources and from within. Despite the odds (being told I could not do this) I continued toward the goal-line. I did so knowing what I was to share with the world in spite of what publishing houses told me 'the reader does not want'.

Do not allow man to detour you from what God has placed in your heart. Wisdom dictates that you accept constructive advice. Obedience to the leading of the Spirit will direct your path to fulfilling your task -- His way.

Remember to press in to touch the hem of His garment. For it is that type of faith that will keep your eyes on the One who can do what man cannot.

In last week’s post I spoke regarding the content of Christian novels and the responsibility of the author. To further this conversation I would like to include content in terms of writing for the youth.

At a convention last year there was much spoken on the wave of YA (young adult/teen) books that would be published this year. I can still remember the wave of concern that swept over me as I considered what the content of these books might be.

As predicted the market is seeing an influx of books marketed in the YA genre. Some I have concerns about. Others, I have found to be quite entertaining and insightful. What is disturbing to me is the semi-negative press I feel the more positive books have received.

Over the next few months I hope to provide a review of some of the books I believe are worth the expense and experience.

If you have comments or suggestions of books for Young Adults, your responses are welcome. Please remember this is a forum for discussion, not for bashing others.

Divine Confidential

Author -- Jacquelin Thomas

IGNORANCE IS NOT BLISS

Ignorance: 1) a lack of knowledge; 2) a willful lack of desire to improve the efficiency, merit, effectiveness or usefulness of one's actions; 3) the state of being ignorant/unaware

Bliss: A state of extreme happiness

For Divine Matthews-Hardison, the combined definitions above become a painful lesson learned.

In this sequel to Simply Divine, we find the self-proclaimed 15-year-old diva and new Christian, ready to resume her life in Temple, Georgia with her Aunt, Uncle and cousins.

As mature as she believes she is, Divine finds that her determination to be the object of worship by her 'boo' can have catastrophic consequences.

In spite of sound advice dispensed by family and friends, we see the head-strong protagonist forge ahead with her plans for bliss, believing she knows what is best for her life. She will soon find that her plans, although seemingly sound, have many flaws.

Although a story of fiction, through the family setting, Author Thomas does a great job of portraying the consequence of choice by teens overwhelmed with raging hormones, peer pressure and personal insecurities. Open dialogue between the characters is realistic and speaks to unasked questions of children in need of answers.

In a world where teen promiscuity and allowance of self-governing is viewed as acceptable, there will be many who will take exception to the content of this book. I find the message in Divine Confidential refreshing and believe it will be of value to many standing at the crossroad of indecision.

Kudos for a job well done.

The Holiness of the Gift

So what does is mean to be a Christian author?

I have had this conversation on numerous occasions with many authors. The responses are varied.

Articles I have read of late have been disturbing. They insist that what Christian’s want is more spice in their fiction. As more 'Christian' books are including profanity and explicit sexual scenarios, they sadly, are rising in popularity and are often referred to when Christian books are the topic.

As Christian authors we have a responsibility to present our stories in a form that will glorify God. We do not have the right to defame His holiness by weaving a few scriptures into a backdrop of decadence. There is no honor in gaining name recognition and increasing our bank accounts at the expense of our brother/sister.

I’d love to hear your opinion on this subject. Please keep in mind that this blog is not meant to bash other authors by naming names. It is a forum to discuss our opinions regarding the Christian arts.
